Bethany Hsiao

I’m a third-year PhD student at the Operations, Information, & Decisions Department at the Wharton School. I am a member of the Computational Social Science Lab and am advised by Professor Duncan Watts. I am also working under the guidance of Professors Hamsa Bastani, Maurice Schweitzer, and Katy Milkman.

My research focuses on how algorithms and AI impact human-decision making. I am particularly interested in how algorithms and AI influence human decision-making in areas where biases or resource constraints are prevalent, such as hiring, healthcare, and criminal justice. Rather than abstracting away algorithms as purely mathematical concepts, I’m interested in how humans perceive algorithms and their broader implications on society.

Before Wharton, I completed my Bachelor’s in Computer & Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, where I was advised by Professor Duncan Watts.
